{"id":90904,"date":"2023-06-02T03:07:00","date_gmt":"2023-06-02T07:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/keriritenour.com\/grace\/the-power-granted-to-christians\/"},"modified":"2023-10-06T23:12:14","modified_gmt":"2023-10-07T03:12:14","slug":"the-power-granted-to-christians","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/keriritenour.com\/grace\/the-power-granted-to-christians\/","title":{"rendered":"The Power Granted to Christians"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Grace Evangelical Free Church<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left\">I<strong>ssues &amp; Answers: The Power Granted to Christians<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>The Tyndale Bible Dictionary\ndefines power as the \u201cability to do things, by virtue of strength, skill,\nresources, or authorization.\u201d The Bible says a Christian\u2019s power comes from God\nthrough the Holy Spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>God is the ultimate source of\npower. All power comes from Him and is subject to Him: \u201c<strong>Yours, LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and\nthe majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours.\nYours, LORD, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head overall. Wealth and honor\ncome from you; you are the ruler of all things. In your hands are strength and\npower to exalt and give strength to all<\/strong>\u201d (<strong>1 Chronicles 29:11\u201312<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many Old Testament passages speak\nof God giving His power to the weak: \u201c<strong>He gives\nstrength to the weary and increases the power of the weak<\/strong>\u201d (<strong>Isaiah 40:29<\/strong>). <strong>Psalm\n68:35<\/strong> says God gives power to His people: \u201c<strong>You, God, are awesome in your sanctuary; the God of Israel\ngives power and strength to his people. Praise be to God!<\/strong>\u201d Frequently,\nwe read of God\u2019s power being given to kings (<strong>1\nSamuel 2:10<\/strong>) and prophets: \u201c<strong>But as for\nme, I am filled with power, with the Spirit of the LORD, and with justice and\nmight, to declare to Jacob his transgression, to Israel his sin<\/strong>\u201d (<strong>Micah 3:8<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>God\u2019s inexhaustible power poured\nforth in the lives of His people is seen in various applications in Scripture.\nThe Bible says the gospel itself is the power of God for salvation: \u201c<strong>For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power\nof God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then\nto the Gentile<\/strong>\u201d (<strong>Romans 1:16<\/strong>;\nalso <strong>1 Corinthians 1:18<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Christian\u2019s power\u2014his ability\nto do anything of worth\u2014is received from the Holy Spirit. When Jesus ascended\non high, He told His disciples to wait for the power they needed: \u201c<strong>But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you;\nand you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to\nthe ends of the earth<\/strong>\u201d (<strong>Acts 1:8<\/strong>).\nWithout the Holy Spirit, the disciples would just be spinning their wheels, no\nmatter how talented, energetic, or enthused they were in presenting the gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Christian\u2019s power from God\nstrengthens the inner being: \u201c<strong>I pray that out of his\nglorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your\ninner being<\/strong>\u201d (<strong>Ephesians 3:16<\/strong>).\nWe do not lose heart because, even \u201c<strong>though outwardly\nwe are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day<\/strong>\u201d (<strong>2 Corinthians 4:16<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Christian\u2019s power from God\nenables him or her to become a servant of the gospel: \u201c<strong>I became a servant of this gospel by the gift of God\u2019s grace\ngiven me through the working of his power<\/strong>\u201d (<strong>Ephesians 3:7<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Christian\u2019s power is not his\nown. After God used Peter to heal a lame beggar, the apostle explained to\nastonished onlookers that the man was healed not by Peter\u2019s own power but\nthrough faith in the name of Jesus Christ: \u201c<strong>Fellow\nIsraelites, why does this surprise you? Why do you stare at us as if by our own\npower or godliness we had made this man walk? The God of Abraham, Isaac and\nJacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified his servant Jesus. . . . By faith\nin the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong. It is\nJesus\u2019 name and the faith that comes through him that has completely healed\nhim, as you can all see<\/strong>\u201d (<strong>Acts 3:12\u201316<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Christian\u2019s power from God\nenables him to endure suffering in the face of persecution: \u201c<strong>The Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us\npower, love and self-discipline. So do not be ashamed of the testimony about\nour Lord or of me his prisoner. Rather, join with me in suffering for the\ngospel, by the power of God<\/strong>\u201d (<strong>2 Timothy\n1:7\u20138<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Christian\u2019s power is perfected\nin weakness: \u201c<strong>But he said to me, \u2018My grace is\nsufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.\u2019 Therefore I will\nboast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ\u2019s power may rest\non me<\/strong>\u201d (<strong>2 Corinthians 12:9<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Christian finds power in\nprayer: \u201c<strong>Therefore confess your sins to each other\nand pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous\nperson is powerful and effective<\/strong>\u201d (<strong>James\n5:16<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>God empowers Christians for\nministry, to speak in His name with confidence in His abiding presence: \u201c<strong>Jesus came and told his disciples, \u2018I have been given all\nauthority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the\nnations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy\nSpirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you.\nAnd be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age\u2019<\/strong>\u201d\n(<strong>Matthew 28:18\u201320<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ephesians 3:20<\/strong> says that God\u2019s power is\nbeyond our comprehension. Divine power is at work in Christians to do far more\nthan all we can ask or even imagine. <strong>Ephesians\n1:19\u201320<\/strong> says that nothing compares to His great power toward us who\nbelieve. The power of God working on our behalf is the same power that raised\nJesus Christ from the dead and seated Him in heavenly places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Believers have a tremendous\nreason to rejoice. The Bible says a Christian\u2019s power supplies all we need for\nliving a holy life in this world of sin: \u201c<strong>By his\ndivine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life.
