Christians sometimes use the\nphrase Jesus is enough as an encouraging tidbit, but what does it really mean?\nJesus is \u201cenough\u201d for what?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jesus is enough to save us.<\/strong> Jesus has \u201cby one sacrifice . . . made perfect forever those who are\nbeing made holy<\/strong>\u201d (Hebrews 10:14<\/strong>). Peter preached that \u201cthere is salvation\nin no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by\nwhich we must be saved<\/strong>\u201d (Acts 4:12<\/strong>). Jesus is the only name that can take\naway our sin and save us\u2014the \u201cname of Jesus\u201d representing all that Jesus Christ\nis and does. There is literally no one and nothing else that we could add to\nChrist to aid our salvation. He finished the work on the cross (John 19:30<\/strong>),\nand what He did is enough to save us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus is enough to provide for us.<\/strong> Paul wrote in Philippians 4:19<\/strong>, \u201cAnd my God will supply every need of yours\naccording to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.<\/strong>\u201d This echoes\nJesus\u2019 words about God\u2019s care for His creation: the sparrows and grass do not\nworry or toil for food or clothes (Matthew 6:25\u201331<\/strong>). It follows that, since God cares\nfor such lowly things in creation, He will also take care of His people. Jesus\nhas the ability and the desire to supply every need we have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus is enough to bless us.<\/strong> Paul said that God \u201cblessed us in Christ with every spiritual\nblessing in the heavenly places<\/strong>\u201d (Ephesians 1:3<\/strong>). He didn\u2019t say a\n\u201cfew\u201d spiritual blessings; he said \u201cevery<\/strong>\u201d spiritual blessing. Since we can\u2019t add\nanything more to \u201cevery<\/strong>,\u201d Jesus is truly enough for every spiritual\nneed we have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus is enough to equip us.<\/strong> We have the promise that God\u2019s \u201cdivine power has bestowed on us<\/strong> (absolutely) everything necessary for<\/strong> [a dynamic spiritual] life and godliness<\/strong>\u201d (2 Peter 1:3<\/strong>). Once again, the language here shows we cannot add anything more: absolutely everything is all-encompassing. Nothing but Jesus is needed to equip us for living a life that pleases God. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus is enough to strengthen us.<\/strong> When Paul prayed three times to the Lord to remove\nthe thorn from his flesh, the response was \u201cMy grace is sufficient for you, for my power is\nmade perfect in weakness<\/strong>\u201d (2 Corinthians 12:9<\/strong>). Even when we are weak, Jesus\u2019\nstrength is enough to carry us onward. In fact, our weakness only perfects His\npower, which leaves no room for adding another power source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus is enough to comfort us.<\/strong> In fact, He is\nthe \u201cGod of all\ncomfort<\/strong>\u201d (2 Corinthians 1:3<\/strong>), meaning while bound in time\nlike animals, yet we have a sense of our own eternity like angels (Ecclesiastes 3:11<\/strong>). We humans suffer distress in a unique\n\u201cthree-dimensional\u201d way\u2014past, present and future. We remember previous\ndistresses and are filled with grief or regrets (Genesis 37:35<\/strong>; Matthew 26:75<\/strong>). We face each day\u2019s\ntroubles and worry (Matthew 6:25\u201332). We reflect\non these things and dread what may come next (verse 34<\/strong>). And beyond these worldly\nmatters is that most distressing sensation of all, the guilt for having deeply,\ninexcusably offended our good and righteous Creator and Judge (James 2:10\u201311<\/strong>;\nRevelation 6:16<\/strong>). Believers in Christ have a comfort from Jesus\nthat includes a true freedom from guilt. For Christians, our righteous Judge is\nalso our loving Savior (John 3:16\u201317<\/strong>)\u2014a sharp contrast with the terrifying\nassortment of distant, cruel, or unappeasable deities of the ancient world into\nwhich Paul brought the good news of free, complete and irrevocable forgiveness,\nreconciliation, and adoption (Romans 3:23\u201325<\/strong>; 2 Corinthians 5:11\u201321<\/strong>; 1 John 3:1\u20132<\/strong>). In fact, all three Persons of the Trinity\nparticipate in comforting us just by being with us. That is enough. The Father\nis always with us, as He was with Moses (Exodus 3:12<\/strong>) and the nation of Israel (Deuteronomy 31:6\u20138<\/strong>).\nSo, too, are the Son (Matthew 28:20<\/strong>; John 14:18<\/strong>) and the Spirit (John 14:16\u201317<\/strong>).\nHence, Paul confidently ends his letter to the Corinthians with the beautiful\nblessing: \u201cMay\nthe grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of\nthe Holy Spirit be with you all<\/strong>\u201d (2 Corinthians 13:14<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus is all we need; there is\nnothing and no one to add to Christ. His person and His work are perfect. He is\nthe way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6<\/strong>). He is the only one who can save,\nprovide, bless, equip, and strengthen. Having faith in Christ involves trusting\nin His complete sufficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I need no other argument,<\/p>\n\n\n\n I need no other plea;<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is enough that Jesus died,<\/p>\n\n\n\n And that he died for me (E. E. Hewitt).<\/p>\n\n\n\n On the night of Jesus arrest,\nPhilip made a request of the Lord: \u201cLord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us<\/strong>\u201d\n(John 14:8<\/strong>).\nJesus\u2019 answer was that He is enough: \u201cDon\u2019t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you\nsuch a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father<\/strong>\u201d (verse 9<\/strong>).\nPhilip thought he needed something else\u2014maybe another sign, maybe a little more\nrevelation\u2014and that would suffice. But Philip already had all he needed,\nstanding right in front of him. For Philip. \nFor me. For you.
