In the Old Testament, the Spirit would come and go from the saints,\nempowering them for service but not necessarily remaining with them (see <strong>Judges 15:14<\/strong>;\n<strong>1 Chronicles\n12:18<\/strong>; <strong>Psalm 51:11<\/strong>; <strong>Ezekiel 11:5<\/strong>). Jesus revealed to His disciples the\nnew role the Spirit of Truth would play in their lives: \u201c<strong>He lives with you and will be in you<\/strong>\u201d\n(<strong>John 14:17<\/strong>).\nThe apostle Paul wrote, \u201c<strong>Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy\nSpirit, who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?\nFor you are bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body<\/strong>\u201d\n(<strong>1 Corinthians\n6:19\u201320<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">These verses are telling us that the believer in\nJesus Christ has the third Person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit, living in\nhim. When an individual accepts Christ as personal Savior, the Holy Spirit\ngives the believer the life of God, eternal life, which is really His very\nnature (<strong>Titus\n3:5<\/strong>; <strong>2\nPeter 1:4<\/strong>), and the Holy Spirit comes to live within him\nspiritually. The fact that the believer\u2019s body is likened to a temple where the\nHoly Spirit lives helps us understand what the indwelling of the Holy Spirit is\nall about. The word temple is used to describe the Holy of Holies, the inner\nsanctum in the Old Testament tabernacle structure. There, God\u2019s presence would\nappear in a cloud and meet the high priest, who came once a year into the Holy\nof Holies. On the Day of Atonement, the high priest brought the blood of a\nslain animal and sprinkled it on the mercy seat of the Ark of the Covenant. On\nthis special day, God granted forgiveness to the priest and His people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Today, there is no Jewish temple in Jerusalem, and\nthe animal sacrifices have ceased. The believer in Christ has become the inner\nsanctum of God the Holy Spirit, as the believer has been sanctified and\nforgiven by the blood of Jesus Christ (<strong>Ephesians 1:7<\/strong>). The believer in Christ becomes the\nhabitation of the Holy Spirit of God. In fact, Scripture also says that the\nbeliever is indwelt spiritually by Christ (<strong>Colossians 1:27<\/strong>) and by God the Father (<strong>1 John 4:15<\/strong>)\u2014the\nTrinity is involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">As the Holy Spirit lives in the believer, He\nbrings about some life-changing results:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">1) The indwelling Spirit comes to a soul dead in\nsin and creates new life (<strong>Titus 3:5<\/strong>). This is the new birth Jesus spoke of\nin <strong>John 3:1\u20138<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">2) The indwelling Spirit confirms to the believer\nthat he belongs to the Lord and is an heir of God and fellow-heir with Christ (<strong>Romans 8:15\u201317<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">3) The indwelling Spirit installs the new believer\nas a member of Christ\u2019s universal church. This is the baptism of the Spirit,\naccording to <strong>1\nCorinthians 12:13<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">4) The indwelling Spirit gives spiritual gifts\n(God-given abilities for service) to the believer to edify the church and serve\nthe Lord effectively for His glory (<strong>1 Corinthians 12:11<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">5) The indwelling Spirit helps the believer\nunderstand and apply the Scripture to his daily life (<strong>1 Corinthians 2:12<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">6) The indwelling Spirit enriches the believer\u2019s\nprayer life and intercedes for him in prayer (<strong>Romans 8:26\u201327<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">7) The indwelling Holy Spirit empowers the yielded\nbeliever to live for Christ to do His will (<strong>Galatians 5:16<\/strong>). The Spirit leads\nthe believer in paths of righteousness (<strong>Romans 8:14<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">8) The indwelling Spirit gives evidence of new\nlife by producing the fruit of the Spirit in the believer\u2019s life (<strong>Galatians 5:22\u201323<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">9) The indwelling Spirit is grieved when the\nbeliever sins (<strong>Ephesians\n4:30<\/strong>), and He convicts the believer to confess his sin to the Lord\nso that fellowship is restored (<strong>1 John 1:9<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">10) The indwelling Spirit seals the believer unto\nthe day of redemption so that the believer\u2019s arrival in the Lord\u2019s presence is\nguaranteed after this life (<strong>Ephesians 1:13\u201314<\/strong>).\n\nWhen you accept Christ as your Savior (<strong>Romans 10:9\u201313<\/strong>),\nthe Holy Spirit takes up residence in your heart, bringing with Him an entirely\nnew life of love, relationship, and service to the Lord.\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The indwelling of the Holy Spirit is the action by which God takes up permanent residence in the body of a believer in Jesus Christ.
